Making TVs smart: why most smart TVs still feel pretty dumb

Sales of smart TVs are decent, but that’s in large part because it’s getting harder to buy a decent TV set that doesn’t come with apps anymore. Last year, a quarter of all broadband households in the U.S. owned a TV set with apps, according to The Diffusion Group. But only 69 percent of those TVs were actually connected to the internet. Meanwhile, another survey found that fewer than half of smart TV owners were actually using those built-in apps as a primary way to bring content to the TV screen; people instead prefer to connect their PC to the TV, or even buy a dedicated companion box to watch internet content in the living room. - Janko Roettgers
