Will Dish and Directv merge? Dish is already conducting trials of a home broadband network with regional operator nTelos using its satellite spectrum as a stand-in for a wireline link. A combined Dish and DirecTV, which would have a combined 34 million subscribers, would then be in a better position to offer a residential broadband service to challenge the cable operators and the phone companies. - Kevin Fitchard
